Eddie Rickenbacker (WWI American Ace and Medal of Honor Winner)
Of course, given how much we like to talk about airplanes in class, I had to include this. I think you will find the information on Rickenbacker interesting. I think compared to the Red Baron his record is like a turtle to a cheetah. But since he was such a good leader he inspired others to fight with as much heart he did.He was a hero.

I was very surprised that they had airplane simulators in those days and I've never seen a pilot so decorated.

Wow that was really cool. I've only seen pictures of WW1 planes in action, so I thought the video was awesome. What kind of plane did he fly? How did his statistics compare to the Red Baron's?

I can't remember if it was ww1 or ww2, but I saw a show that talked about the aces. If I remember correctly many were killed in air combat. Which is kinda ironic considering that they did the same thing to the enemy.

So in total Eddie Rickenbacker shot down 30 enemy aircrafts,wow,thats pretty good. How much money would 30 airplanes cost to build back then? I cant imagine what it would be like to be high in the air alone vs 7 enemy aircrafts. I mean when i am in an airplane and it hits turbulence i am scared. Eddie Rickenbacker is a true american hero.

Wow, Eddie Rickenbacker was a great hero. He was a strong fighter and a good leader to others. I can't imagine what it would be like in the skies. I think that it would be so hard to maneuver with so much action going on all around you. Did he ever get shot down and escaped his plane by an ejection and parachuted down? Did he have some special plane because he was so good. Rickenbacker was an amazing pilot.
jb2 Eddie flew a Nieuport 28 which was one of the classic French fighters. He flew the French fighter because most of the time the men that wanted to join the war had to sail across the Atlantic and enlist with the French Airforce.
I can't beleive that they didn't have a lot of armor to protect the planes. It would seem smart for a growing country like the U.S. to have more advanced planes.
